The credit of establishing Indore goes to the reputed Holkar Queen, Rani Ahilya Bai who planned the city on the confluence of Rivers Saraswati and Khan. Even earlier it was a main trading center as it was a convenient place on the main pilgrimage route from Mahakaal to Omkareshwar. Some of the structures reminding of the royalty of the bygone era include the Lalbaug Palace and the Rajwada. The Lalbaug Palace is home to the descendants of the Holkar dynasty. Rajwada is another palace from the Holkars that is still a marvel for Indore. A seven-storeyed wonder, it has wooden top floors which have been burnt down by fire many a times. The Kaanch Mandir or Palace of Mirrors, close to the Rajwada is another place worth visiting. More of a religious place, Indore is full of sites which hold religious importance. A little away from the main city is the sacred island if Omkareshwar located on the confluence of Narmada and Kaveri. Believed to be one of the 12 Jyotirlingas in the country, it is a major devotee attraction. The site for the famus Kumbh Mela, Ujjain is another noted religious place lying close to Indore. Bada Ganpati is a famous temple in Indore which houses the largest Ganapati idol in the world.
